A taste of France with French Roulette

Learning French Roulette has never been easier… You might already have heard of the American and European versions, but French Roulette also offers just as much excitement.

French Roulette introduction

The wheel used for the French version of Roulette is the same as the European wheel. It has 37 divisions from 1-36 with the addition of a 0. The numbers are red and black in an alternating fashion. The 0 as always, is green.

The numbers on a European Roulette wheel are positioned in a different way, as well. There’s also a different outside betting field position to take note of. The outside bets in American Roulette are normally found on the left side of the table. In the French version, the outside betting field is split into two and placed alongside both sides of the table. There are French terms on the table, which normally come with English translations below.

Game Play

Regardless of the wheel, different table and house edge differences, the main objective of this game remains the same regardless of the variant. You must correctly predict which section; zone or number the ball is going to land on.

Players are allowed to place their bets on as many different combinations as you like, provided they’re in the table maximum.

French Roulette Game Rules

Players are required to place their desired bet combinations before the dealer can turn the wheel and spin the ball. Once bets are placed and the dealer is set to go, they will turn the wheel in one direction and spin the ball into the wheel in the opposite direction. Once the ball comes to settle in a specific numbered pocket, the player who has bet on this pocket will be paid.

With every single number out of all 37 being arranged in the same way around the wheel, the ball has an even and fair chance of being able to land in any of the pockets. Bets can still be placed, changed, or removed even after the wheel has been spun. If the dealer states that no more bets are allowed, nothing may change.

Once a winning number has been identified, it will be marked on the table using a marker. Winners will be paid and losing bets will be swept off the table.

Be aware of two French rule variations that relate to the ball landing in the zero pocket:

  • En Prison: This means your bet is “in jail” so you don’t lose it, but you will stay on this bet for the next round.
  • La Partage: This means you split your bet and get half of it back. Thereafter, you are free to bet as you wish.

Game Bets

Each table has both a minimum and maximum betting amount. Your bets cannot be less than the minimum or more than the maximum.
This variation allows the same bets as European and American Roulette, they just have French names. Not to worry though, there are translations to help you.

Inside bets: Betting on a certain straddle or number.
Outside bets: Betting on odd/even outcomes, colour and groups of pockets.

Inside bet options include:

  • Straight-Up Bet – Placed on any single number
  • Split Bet – A bet placed on the line between two adjacent numbers
  • Street Bet – Three numbers in a row
  • Corner Bet – Placed at the corner where four numbers touch
  • Five Bet – Involving 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and is placed at the corner by 0 and 1
  • Line Bet – Featuring six numbers (or two rows of three numbers)

Outside bets include:

  • Column Bet – This includes an entire column
  • Dozen Bet – Including a group of 12 numbers
  • Bet on Colour – All the red numbers or all of the black ones
  • Bet on Odd/Even – All even numbers or all odd ones
  • Bet on Low/High – All low numbers or all high numbers

Pay Table/Win Table

By moving your mouse over the betting region where you can see minimum and maximum bet amounts, you can make the pay table pop up. This will provide a correct and summarised version of all of the most common bets. If you’re looking for something more detailed, you’ll have to take a look at the game rules.

Possible Settings

Much like many other Table Games, this one has a host of settings.
You can turn sounds and background music on or off, to your liking. You can also select your own soundtrack.

Whilst this will depend on the type of online casino you choose to play with, you can enjoy settings like Quick Spin, Bet Highlighting, Auto Adjust Bet and Game History settings that you can tailor in line with your own preferences.
